Apart from the above materials which are commonly used in the making of contemporary doors, a few lesser known materials are also used in order to fulfil specific requirements. For instance, police stations often use bullet proof materials for the purpose of additional security. Ecologically conscious builders and architects sometimes use quickly renewable wooden materials. For buildings which might be exposed to the risk of fire, doors are sometimes given a mineral core which would stop the spread of fire.

• French doors with hinges that swing in and out are also used in offices.
