Materials Used In The Making of Contemporary Doors
Doors serve as entry and exit points to a residential or commercial building, and also serve as the point at which the building is secured from intrusions. Although doors are more functional than decorative in nature, yet contemporary doors utilize a number of different raw materials and a number of designs to make them effective yet attractive.
Wood is the original material that was used for years to make the door frames, but because of its timeless beauty and also its sturdiness, wood is used even today to make contemporary doors. Teak, oak and other such heavy woods were traditionally used in making doors, but nowadays plywood is much preferred. Wooden doors have one disadvantage which is that they are not resistant to termites. To prevent this, pre treated polyboards are used to make the door panels, and later on coated with a fine finish anti termite paint.
Wood gradually has given way to steel as a preferred material for making doors, and steel is more popular in the construction of the large doors of commercial buildings, although even residential owners have slowly started embracing steel to construct their contemporary doors also. Increased security, low maintenance and greater insulation are just a few of the additional benefits that steel doors provide.
Aluminium is another material that has become very popular in recent years for door construction. The prime reason for this is a unique feature of aluminium – when it is exposed to air, a chemical reaction takes place that makes its outer surface more hard and strong. Also, like steel, it does not rust when exposed to air or rain. Aluminium has a very classy, shiny look which also adds to its attractiveness as a preferred raw material for contemporary doors.
Fiberglass is another contemporary material that is used in the making of doors nowadays. Although these doors are slightly costlier, yet they are almost as sturdy as steel, and very resistant to moisture and air. It is also as good as steel in the matter of providing insulation.
Apart from the above materials which are commonly used in the making of contemporary doors, a few lesser known materials are also used in order to fulfil specific requirements. For instance, police stations often use bullet proof materials for the purpose of additional security. Ecologically conscious builders and architects sometimes use quickly renewable wooden materials. For buildings which might be exposed to the risk of fire, doors are sometimes given a mineral core which would stop the spread of fire.
